Logos
In the novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” Christopher Boone is a coming of age boy on the autism spectrum. Because of his disability he perceives the world in a different way than other people normally would. For Christopher to make sense of the world around him he uses logic , or logos, for his reasonings and decisions.

"I wondered whether I should open the envelope because it was something I had taken from Father's room. But then I reasoned that it was addressed to me so it belonged to me so it was OK to open it."(page 96)
In the letter mentioned above, Christopher's mother is writing to him a few years after Christopher was told she was dead. Christopher's father lies to Christopher about his mother's death because he can’t handle his own emotions about what happened, and doesn’t want to hurt Christopher by telling him his mother left him.Because these actions are based on emotion, Christopher can’t comprehend them very well, and all he takes from them is that his father can’t be trusted. This example shows logos because Christopher is persuading himself to open the letter based on logical arguments and supportive evidence. |
"I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking....Also, dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk." (page 3)
Christopher uses logical reasoning throughout this chapter to explain why he likes dogs and trusts them more than humans. He trusts dogs because they can't talk, so they also can't lie. Christopher immediately distrusts people who lie because he can't always understand what they mean or why they would tell a lie. This reasoning is considered logos because he is explaining his reasoning behind his belief in an analytical manner.
